NPSA Warns Businesses to Prepare for 2009 Hurricane Season

The National Portable Storage Association is warning businesses to prepare for the possibility of major storms hitting the Atlantic coast this hurricane season.

Kansas City, MO, June 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, is predicting a near-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year. However, the administration is calling people to prepare for the possibility of a major storm striking in the months ahead.

In its initial forecast for the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through November, NOAA's National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center said there is a 70 percent chance of having nine to 14 named storms, of which four to seven could become hurricanes. The forecast includes one to three major hurricanes.

"This outlook is a guide to the overall expected seasonal activity. However, the outlook is not just about the numbers, it's also about taking action," said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. "Prepare for each and every season regardless of the seasonal outlook."

The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, is recommending businesses know the elevation of their building as it relates to sea level. The elevation is a key factor in assessing your building's vulnerability to flooding. The NPSA also recommends reviewing the condition of your building to ensure it can withstand hurricane force winds and waves.

"If your local officials call for an evacuation, don't hesitate to leave," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA. "Since you can't bring your entire business with you, rent a portable storage unit ahead of time so you can leave your business site knowing that your most valuable possessions are safe. Portable storage containers can withstand hurricane force winds and may help you save critical business assets in the face of a major weather threat."
