Maui Film Festival—First Waves Break Big

Maui Film Festival Lights Up the Night Sky. Attendance Soars to over 7,500+ in First Two Days. Wilson Brothers and Living Legends of Surfing Honored.

Paia, HI, June 17, 2005 --(PR.com)-- As the 2005 Maui Film Festival at Wailea wrapped up day two following sold out screenings of THE PERFECT MAN and DEEP BLUE on Opening Night and THE WENDELL BAKER STORY and HUSTLE & FLOW on Thursday at the Celestial Cinema, the festival’s crown jewel under-the-stars venue. Festival Director Barry Rivers joked that, “temperatures on the island of Maui hit 90° Fahrenheit at mid-day and topped the boiling point 212°F by midnight, even sunscreen with a SPF of 45 wasn’t enough the protect you from the heat.”

The first luminaries in the constellation of stars that make up this year’s Maui Film Festival at Wailea’s ‘Ohana (Hawaiian for family) of Honorees were also honored in Thursday Night as The Wilson Brothers—Luke, Andrew and Owen—and living legends of surfing Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama were honored, respectively, with the Maui Film Festival’s Shooting Star Award and Beacon Award.

The inaugural Shooting Star Award was presented to the Wilson Brothers in honor of their ever-entertaining collective body of work and their inspired co-creation of THE WENDELL BAKER STORY. The inaugural Beacon Award was presented to tow-in surfing pioneers Hamilton and Kalama, for the infinite possibilities of their commitment to live a life beyond limits, outside of fear, inside of courage, and inspired by wonder.

Others being honored over the Maui Film Festival’s remaining days include: Jake Gyllenhaal, William H. Macy, Helen Hunt, and Mike Myers.

The Festival’s first two days featured its usual array of world-class culinary arts celebrations. Others still to come include the Starry Night MoonDance at Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Cafe, Taste of Wailea at the Wailea Golf Club, and the Starz! Audience Awards and Cosmic Dance Party at Bamboo Chi Restaurant.

Other films that have attracted huge praise at the festival include HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, THE LAND HAS EYES, THE CUTTING EDGE, MANA BEYOND BELIEF, OCEAN ODYSSEY, THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN, and AWAKE ZION.
