Robert B. Willumstad ’05 (Hon.), Former Chairman of the Board of AIG, to Speak at Adelphi University on September 24, 2009

Garden City, NY, August 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Robert B. Willumstad ’05 (Hon.), former chairman of the board of American International Group, Inc. (AIG), will deliver the annual Hagedorn Lecture Series on Corporate Social Responsibility on Thursday, September 24, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in Adelphi’s Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is free and open to the public.

Mr. Willumstad joined the board of directors of AIG in January 2006 and was subsequently elected chairman of the board in September 2006. In an unprecedented move, the Federal Reserve Board authorized the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to lend up to $85 billion to AIG to protect the interests of the United States government and taxpayers in September 2008. The decision was the most radical intervention in private business in the central bank’s history. Officials decided they had to act to ensure the least possible disruption to the overall economy.

Prior to AIG, Mr. Willumstad co-founded Brysam Global Partners as a private equity firm, investing in emerging markets financial institutions and currently serves as a senior advisor to the firm.

Mr. Willumstad served as the president and COO of Citigroup, Inc. until August 2005. From 2000 to 2003, he was the chairman and CEO of Citigroup’s Global Consumer Group. In this role, he led all of Citigroup’s global consumer businesses including credit cards, consumer finance, and retail banking.

Prior to joining Citigroup’s predecessor companies, Mr. Willumstad spent 20 years with Chemical Bank in various positions, including president of Chemical Technologies Corporation.

Mr. Willumstad received an honorary degree and was elected to the Adelphi University Board of Trustees in 2005. He also serves as a board member of SC Johnson and Commercial International Bank of Egypt and a Trustee for the American Scandinavian Foundation. He previously served on the board of directors of MasterCard International and Habitat for Humanity.

Since its inception in 2003, Adelphi’s annual lectureship series on Corporate Social Responsibility has enabled the University to invite prominent speakers to address pressing issues of the day. The series was made possible through a generous contribution from Horace Hagedorn ’01 (Hon.) and wife Amy Hagedorn ’05 (Hon.), and fits in with the University’s overall goal of creating a culture of conscience among students, faculty, staff, administrators, and local community members. Previous speakers include David Boies, Thomas J. Donohue M.B.A. ’65, Noreen Harrington ’81, Peter G. Peterson, Josh S. Weston, Arthur Levitt, and Eugene Ludwig.
