Leadership Development Needs Moral Courage

Will Marre, leadership development expert, inspired green business leaders to re-invent the American economy by designing and manufacturing sustainable products and services.

Chicago, IL, September 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- “The future will go to those who can turn sustainability into value,” stated Will Marre, leadership development expert and author of Save the World and Still Be Home For Dinner (Capital Books) at the Green Business Expo today. In his high-energy keynote Marre challenged the audience of CEOs, business owners, designers and product developers with the idea that our country’s economic future depends on our manufacturing sector overthrowing the leadership thinking of the past 50 years which focused on turning things into money.

Marre discussed how the leadership training provided by our business schools only turns out “management clones” who reduce business to budgeting, bureaucracy and benchmarking which suffocates innovation. He urged the audience to adopt a new model of leadership development he calls REALeadership (http://thoughtrocket.com/whatwedo/the-realeadership-benefit/). In “Leadership Development For A Sustainable Future” (http://www.prweb.com/releases/leadershipdevelopment/businessleadership/prweb2935634.htm) Marre discusses how REALeadership creates a new kind of enterprise, enterprises that have the cause of a non-profit, the agility of a start-up and the discipline of a large-scale enterprise.

Marre used many examples from his own consulting including a strategy session he conducted for Chevy executives in 1995 when he asked them, “Would the world notice if GM went out of business?” He said that the executives sat in stunned disbelief that anyone could conceive of the question. Marre went on to say that the traditional businesses-as-usual focus on financial returns drives otherwise smart people to make Hummers while organizations who are committed to sustainable value create a Prius. According to Marre, designing, making and selling the Prius when every financial analyst claimed there was no market for high-mileage, low emission cars was an act of moral courage.

Unless leaders have the moral courage and enlightened vision to re-invent our American economy as a designing and manufacturing powerhouse for a future of sustainable abundance, Marre said, we are doomed to be stagnant. “This is the end of the mall-based economy,” asserted Marre. “Our future requires a new leadership model which promotes a unique process called Evergreen innovation to take green manufacturing beyond its current limits to sustainable abundance.”

Marre concluded his keynote by citing survey research that saving the world is exactly what 86 percent of the global workforce wants to be engaged in (http://hbr.harvardbusiness.org/2009/07/how-gen-y--boomers-will-reshape-your-agenda/ar/1). He used personal examples of clients who trained their employees to come up with new sustainable products and new sustainable services to get new customers. He concluded, “What’s happening now is nothing less than a revolution, and for those who are ready, the future is unlimited.” (See Will Marre Leadership Development Interview by Business TV at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb7BukBNiZc.)
