Web Courseworks Releases “Get Your Gear On!” to Casual Game Sites

Online game encouraging safe bicycle riding takes on a new twist

Madison, WI, October 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Web Courseworks, a Washington DC and Madison, WI eLearning company, announced the release of the educational game “Get Your Gear On!” to the online casual game market (http://www.webcourseworks.com/showcase/getyourgearon). The game was originally developed for the Children’s Health Education Center (CHEC) to raise awareness on bicycle safety.

Get Your Gear On! is a bike racing game that teaches children the consequences of wearing (or not wearing) a bike helmet. In the original game, the player drags a helmet onto his or her character to find out the consequences of not wearing a helmet. The object of the game is to steer through obstacles and arrive at school on time. In the new casual game, the character picks up money while riding around town (a federal stimulus truck has leaked the money all over town), then uses the money to purchase objects that help the character perform better in the game—including helmets. The object of the game is to win bike races in the park.

Get Your Gear On! was programmed in Adobe Flash by Joe Rheaume of Chronotron fame. His Chronotron casual game has surpassed 10 million Internet plays and has been nominated and received numerous awards.

“This game was another interesting opportunity to explore the difference between a casual game and an educational game,” said Rheaume. “You can still have the educational content, but you have to be much more subtle about how you present it.”

Get Your Gear On! is one part of a larger public safety education program, the BlueKids.org online initiative, which uses game-based learning to promote children’s health education in schools and throughout the community.
