Raleigh, NC, January 15, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Nancy McFarlane, president of MedPro Rx, Inc. (www.medprorx.com), a provider of specialty pharmacy services to clients with chronic illnesses who need clotting factor, IVIg and other medication, has announced the release of a podcast detailing the 2010 “Education is Power” scholarship program. In the podcast, Kathy Robinette-Stoneberg, scholarship coordinator for the pharmacy, explains the history of the program and how students can apply. MedPro Rx’s “Education is Power” program is open to U.S. residents who are living with a bleeding disorder (hemophilia or von Willebrand Disease), entering or attending a community college, junior college, four-year college, university or vocational school, and active in their community. Since starting the program in 2006, the pharmacy has distributed $207,000 nationwide.

Quotes:
“With the proper education, a student will have plentiful job opportunities,” said Robinette-Stoneberg. “Normally a person with a good job will have health insurance options that will allow them the freedom of access to health care and prescription benefits, which are much needed by persons with bleeding disorders. I encourage all interested students to listen to the testimonials on our Web site and apply for the program.”

Details:
- In 2009, the pharmacy awarded 78 scholarships in 31 states totaling $72,000 for students living with bleeding disorders.

- A minimum of 20 scholarships will be awarded ranging in value from $500 to $2,500 in 2010.

- The deadline to apply for the 2010 scholarships is May 1, 2010.

- People with hemophilia experience bleeding following an injury and may have frequent spontaneous bleeding episodes, often into the joints and muscles. More traumatic injuries may result in serious problems and potential disability. It is largely an inherited disorder, but in about 30 percent of cases there is no family history of the condition and it is the result of a spontaneous gene mutation. Approximately one in every 5,000 males nationwide is born with hemophilia, affecting all racial and socioeconomic groups equally. The three most common types of hemophilia are Hemophilia A or Factor VIII Deficiency, Hemophilia B or Factor IX Deficiency, and vWD.

- vWD is caused by a deficiency or defect of a clotting protein, and it affects approximately one percent to two percent of the United States population. Unlike hemophilia, vWD occurs equally among males and females and is more likely to cause nosebleeds and bleeding under the skin than into the joints.
