Dr. Charles Hamner Recognized with Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award

Research Triangle Park, NC, April 17, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences (www.thehamner.org), an independent, nonprofit organization that offers an open, collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to translational biomedical research, has announced that Charles E. Hamner, Jr., D.V.M., Ph.D., chairman of the board of directors at The Hamner, has been recognized with the Triangle Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award. Chosen for the contributions he has made to the biosciences industry throughout the Southeast, Dr. Hamner has been instrumental in transforming North Carolina into a booming biotechnology state.

Hamner led the N.C. Biotechnology Center, the nation’s first state-sponsored biotech initiative, for 14 years. He helped hire more than 40 of the world's best scientists into the research universities. The Center granted the research universities $70 million to pay for professors, and the professors in turn applied to research organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for grants, winning $850 million in funding. Under Dr. Hamner's leadership, the Center provided biotechnology workshops for 1,000 high school teachers, with the result that 100,000 students learned about life sciences careers in the biotech industry. To move research results from the laboratory to the market, Dr. Hamner helped develop a convertible loan fund that helped 52 startup companies obtain $450 million in venture capital. Among the 14 top biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies he helped recruit to the area are Bayer, BASF, Biogen and Wyeth. These companies built $900 million worth of facilities and created 6,000 new jobs in North Carolina.

The state of North Carolina spent millions promoting Hamner’s biotechnology business plan, but has reaped billions from the effort. Today, North Carolina ranks among the nation’s top five biotechnology states and third in the number of biotechnology companies, according to Ernst and Young's 2006 industry survey.

“I’m honored to receive this kind of recognition for my life’s work,” said Hamner. “We have a remarkable opportunity to enlighten the world's view of the causes of illness and to bring about the best result: safer medicines for treating human disease and development of chemical products friendly to our environment. With the convergence of academia, industry and government along with the generosity of individuals and foundations, we stand ready to translate and interpret these innovations with more certainty, in a shorter time with less expense to benefit people who are sick or to delay potential illness. I am both humbled and pleased to be a part this process.”

“We are proud that Dr. Hamner has been honored with the Triangle Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Dr. William F. Greenlee, president and CEO of The Hamner. “I join him in seeking new levels of excellence in research and bridging the gap between scientific discovery and the development of new and safer medicines so that children and adults worldwide may lead healthier lives.”
