Arthur Bergeron Elected New Chairman of Marlborough Economic Development Corporation

Well known Marlborough lawyer in practice for over 30 years, elected as the chairman of the MEDC

Marlborough, MA, May 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Arthur Bergeron, well known Marlborough lawyer in practice for over 30 years, has been elected as the chairman of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

At the MEDC board meeting held on May 12, Bergeron was elected to take over from outgoing chairman and former Mayor Michael Hogan, who assisted Mayor Nancy Stevens in founding MEDC as Marlborough 2010 Corporation in 2006.

In his outgoing comments Hogan stated that the opportunities and challenges faced by MEDC are bigger today than at its inception. “We are at a tipping point; the public sector can help guide things but it is the business sector that has the resources to think strategically about the future of the City.”

Hogan has always been of the opinion that it is vitally important to reach out to businesses in Marlborough. In his view, the tax base provided by the Marlborough business community is essential to funding services in the City which relieves some of the tax burden off residents. He discussed the fact that right now Marlborough has a commercial vacancy rate at about 34% which is extremely high when compared to other communities in Massachusetts and reminded all that much more needs to be done to fill the empty spaces and to keep local businesses in Marlborough.

Newly elected Chairman Bergeron thanked the board for their vote and indicated that he was excited about the organization and that he had several initiatives he would like to see happen during his term. He discussed the possibility of having a conference in Marlborough that would coincide with the next full board meeting in September which would concentrate on the “innovative” economy of Marlborough. He discovered through his law practice recently that there are 28 patents pending by businesses in Marlborough and sees this as an opportunity to encourage the expansion of these businesses. Bergeron wants to provide an opportunity for these companies to come together to share information and to meet each other. Mirick O’Connell has agreed to sponsor this workshop. In addition, Bergeron stated that his focus is going to be on the businesses that encircle the core of the community which provide the most jobs and have a large financial stake in Marlborough.

Currently with the law firm Mirick O’Connell, Bergeron is a Trustee for Marlborough Hospital and a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association. Bergeron received his JD from Boston University School of Law and an AB, cum laude, from Princeton University.
