Dr. Qiang Zhang of The Hamner Institutes Wins National Award

Research Triangle Park, NC, May 27, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences (www.thehamner.org), an independent, nonprofit organization that offers an open, collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to translational biomedical research, has announced that Dr. Qiang Zhang, M.D. Ph.D. has earned the “Outstanding New Investigator” award by The International Dose-Response Society (www.dose-response.org). The IDRS presented its awards Tuesday, April 27 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass.

Dr. Zhang received his M.D. from Harbin Medical University in the People’s Republic of China and his Ph.D. in Physiology and Neurobiology from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on adaptive cellular response to biological stressors and how nonlinear dose response arises from the underlying molecular circuits.

Quotes:
“Dr. Zhang is most deserving of the ‘Outstanding New Investigator’ award,” said Dr. William Greenlee, president and CEO of The Hamner. “He is developing important new predictive health outcomes computational models that will play a key role in informing and guiding public health policy. Dr. Zhang is Director of The Hamner Center for Dose Response Modeling and is one of the institute’s leaders in a public-private partnership with EPA, NIEHS and other federal and global regulatory agencies to advance and transform chemical safety sciences.”

“This reward recognizes the research I have conducted in the past few years aiming to understand, using computer simulations, the nature of many experimentally observed nonlinear, including non-monotonic, biological dose response curves in the low-dose region for a variety of chemicals,” said Dr. Zhang.

Details:
- Criteria for the award include relevancy of research to low dose response, mentor recommendations, membership in professional societies and indicators of promising career direction.
- Both the American Chemistry Council’s Long Range Research Initiative and the National Institutes of Health funded Dr. Zhang’s research.
- The International Dose-Response Society is dedicated to the enhancement, exchange, and dissemination of ongoing global research efforts in the field of hormesis and strongly encourages the assessment of the implications of hormesis for the diverse and pertinent fields of toxicology, pharmacology, medicine, risk assessment and communication, medicine, biomedical research, and the many biological disciplines and relevant engineering domains dealing with the dose-response.
- The Society presented its awards at the 9th Annual International Conference, held Tuesday, April 27 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass.
