Multi-Disciplinary Engineering Firm Buro Happold Wins Lighting Design Award for Sperone Westwater Gallery

Buro Happold earns a top annual lighting design award from the International Association of Lighting Designers awards program, the premier lighting design competition.

New York, NY, May 21, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Buro Happold received an Award of Excellence for the Sperone Westwater Gallery in New York City, designed by architect Foster + Partners, at the 28th Annual International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) International Lighting Design Awards presentation. Out of 189 submissions, only six projects received the IALD Award of Excellence. The program is the longest-running internationally-recognized industry benchmark for architectural lighting design excellence.

The award-winning lighting scheme highlights the main architectural feature of the Sperone Westwater Gallery, the Ferrari red-colored illuminated moving room. The 12 by 20-ft. moving room acts as a medium of transportation as well as a gallery with rotating exhibits. Through the milled glass façade, the moving room’s silhouette is prominently visible from multiple angles along the street.

To showcase the moving room at night, Buro Happold used state-of-the-art tight-beam linear LED fixtures mounted to the room’s exterior walls on the top and bottom, as well as on the wall facing the street. The light, filling the vertical space above and below the moving room, automatically adjusts intensity to adapt to the moving room’s position as it travels between the second and fifth floors.

“Creating a visual harmony between the lighting in the moving room shaft and the façade above the setback was quite the challenge,” says Gabe Guilliams, an Associate who leads Buro Happold’s lighting team in New York. “We realized during commissioning that we were able to dissolve the physical barrier between the two by matching the brightness of the ceiling of the moving room shaft with the façade above. This was vital to making the entire building appear as a single entity each time the room goes in motion.”
