2011 2nd Annual Perspective Awards

The Perspective Awards celebrates the Outdoor Lifestyle and Entertainment and are presented to individuals who believe that "Outdoors is for everyone." Perspective Award recipients work passionately regardless of conventional thought to share their ideology.

Kansas City, MO, October 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Urban American Outdoors (UAO) held its Perspective Awards luncheon during the 2nd Annual Urban Outdoor Summit Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Kansas City’s Bartle Hall Convention Center.

Award winning journalist, Roy Hobbs was the presenter at the luncheon which was facilitated by Urban American Outdoors’ host, Wayne Hubbard. The first award presented was the “Pioneer Award." This award is given to a trailblazer, an original ground breaker living the Outdoor lifestyle, Mr. David Wyatt. David Wyatt was one of the founders of the Triple “F” Sportsmen Club back in the 50’s; Triple F Sportsmen was one of the first original black hunting and fishing clubs documented in the Midwest. The club was created because these men were never allowed to join other clubs who would hunt deer, pheasant or fish Bass.

Next award was given to an individual who believes passionately that in order to save and preserved the future of outdoors and all of its natural resources that the US has to be inclusive and educate future generations. Robert Shinn the Director of Civil Rights Regions 1 and 10 of the United States Forest Service was presented the “Diversity Outdoors Industry Professional” award for his service in this area.

Tyrone Phillips was selected as the recipients of the “Pro Angler” award. Tyrone Phillips is a highly skilled Bass Angler from Arkansas who is very focused on sportsmanship. He is dedicated, motivating, and shares his love of the sport enthusiastically with others while introducing them to the sport of Bass Fishing.

Next award “Outdoor Advocate and Educator” went to Shelley Coulter, Director of the Kansas City Kansas School Foundation for Excellence. Shelley Coulter is out in the community assisting young people in achieving their dreams and has been a big supporter of outdoors outreach to young people. Mrs. Coulter is very passionate about the children and works countless hours securing scholarships and mentoring our youth.

The “Business Development” award went to Ollie Johnson who is the Ombudsman and Chief Investigator for the city of Kansas City. He encourages small business and helps navigate through the waters for them to achieve success in their endeavors.

Barry Roberts, the next award recipient for over 30 years was responsible for some of the biggest music entertainers in the world, and a devout outdoors man. Barry Roberts, CEO of the Roberts Music Group, an award winning top executive was presented the Perspective Award for “Arts & Entertainment.”

Many African Americans participate in outdoors sporting and the numbers have grown annually; but without a way of getting their story to the general public, people would still be asking “Do black people really do that.” In acknowledging the relevance of our nations’ Black Press, The KC Call and its’ Editor, Donna Stewart received the “Media” Award. The Kansas City Call is 92 years old.

Perspective Award for “Outstanding Sportsman” went to Dean Carroll “Harlem Diver”. Dean a PADI Master has been a true sportsman promoting diving all across the world; he also skis, and has hunted with Urban American Outdoors.

Candice Price Executive Producer for Urban American Outdoors and Organizer of the Perspective Award stated, “The one thread that is common here is that these everyday people all have a great love for the Outdoors and are continuing in their pursuits and dreams as they share their beautiful stories. They know that the Outdoors is an inclusive arena which welcomes everyone. All of these people are trailblazers in the Outdoors; each in his or her own way is making a difference and formulating positive images in our communities and we are happy to provide them a platform.”
