ACHS CIO Erika Yigzaw Awarded 2012 DETC Distinguished Recognition Award

Portland, OR, May 20, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Erika Yigzaw, Chief Institutional Officer (CIO) of the American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS), has been awarded the 2012 Distinguished Recognition Award, presented at the 86th Annual Conference of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) on April 17, 2012 in recognition and appreciation of her outstanding contributions to the advancement of distance education.

This honor recognizes outstanding work on special projects that have contributed to the advancement of distance education and DETC (http://www.detc.org) and has been awarded to 23 individuals since 1988.

“It's a great pleasure to award this Distinguished Recognition Award to Erika—her outstanding support for distance education and her tireless work on DETC special projects has more than earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues,” says Marie Sirney, Chair of the DETC Awards and Recognition Committee and Executive Vice President of American Graduate University.

The 2012 Distinguished Recognition Award celebrates Yigzaw’s contributions to the DETC Business Standards Committee, the Technology SubCommittee, and various Task Forces. With technical expertise, Yigzaw facilitated the migration of DETC’s online courses to eCollege. Additionally, Yigzaw has dedicated her time and knowledge to many taskforce activities and conference presentations, including technology and outcomes assessment. She has served on many on-site evaluation visits on behalf of the DETC Accrediting Commission since 2003, as both the Education Standards Evaluator and the Business Standards Evaluator.

“I am thrilled and honored to receive this award from the DETC,” said Yigzaw. “While receiving the award is indeed an honor, to be selected from such an outstanding group to receive this award is particularly humbling. DETC’s commitment to furthering excellence in distance education without exception, all while fostering a collegial environment, is truly inspiring. This is not an ordinary group: I am continually inspired by my peers at this organization and the work we do together to empower our students to change their lives through education.”

Yigzaw is the Chief Institutional Officer for ACHS and holds a Bachelors Degree (B.Com) in Commerce (Economics major) and an LL.B. (first professional law degree) from the prestigious University of Otago Law School. Before joining ACHS, she practiced law at Bell Gully Buddle Weir in Auckland, New Zealand, consistently recognized as New Zealand's leading law firm. She serves as an advisor to the Aromatherapy Registration Council in the U.S. and presents at national conferences and local community events. Yigzaw has also completed the Master Gardener program through Oregon State University and volunteers extensively in the community in that capacity.
