Independent Film Beats Harry Potter at the Box Office
Filmmaker Hotep, aka Hustle Simmons, premiered his hip-hop film, "Independent, Doin' Major Things", at an Atlanta theater. It was number one at the Cinefe 8 Movie Theater on opening night. Both viewers and critics gave rave reviews about the movie that serves as a "how-to" for getting into the entertainment industry.
Atlanta, GA, December 09, 2005 --(PR.com)-- Although most of Atlanta felt a severe chill on the night of Friday, November 18, 2005 the Cinefe 8 Movie Theater had a surplus of heat. Heat from the multitude of warm bodies lining up, eagerly awaiting to view Skinnymen Productions theatrical debut of their landmark edu-tainment documentary, Independent, Doin’ Major Things. After stirring up the attention of PBS, Laffapolooza, Sundance and film representatives off hype alone, Hotep, aka Hustle Simmons has also proven that his film and unique promotional techniques could deliver at the box office as well.
According to Cinefe 8 official results, ticket sales for Independent, Doin’ Major Things at the theater almost doubled those for Harry Potter 4 who opened on the same night. While on a national scale Harry Potter 4 grossed many millions of dollars, this small victory is raking in huge results for Skinnymen Productions and its heroic leader. “It’s funny…” recalls Hotep, “I was actually disappointed that we didn’t have a line reaching around the block! Once I heard the final box office results though, I knew all our hard work had paid off. Our momentum is really starting to snowball now. Our website has been temporarily shut down because of the tremendous traffic. We’ve also received many offers to screen the film in other cities.”
The newfound interest in Independent, Doin’ Major Things and Hotep as a guest speaker has spurred an official 2006 national tour at theaters, film festivals, music/ film conferences, colleges, universities, teen centers and clubs in major US cities. Already booked are appearances in Jacksonville, Fl; Park City, Utah; Reno, Nevada; Los Angeles, Ca; Brooklyn, NY and Orlando, Florida.
