PopUp! Pittsburgh to Bring the Wizard of Oz to Mt. Washington - First Annual “Emerald of Mt. Washington” 5K Race and Festival

On May 11, 2013 the Emerald of Mt. Washington 5K and Festival will be held, the fifth installment of PopUp! Pittsburgh, a Leadership Pittsburgh, Inc. program. Ladies, gentlemen, and munchkins of all ages are invited to participate in the 5K race and festival, which will highlight the Emerald View Park system and Mt. Washington business district.

Pittsburgh, PA, April 10, 2013 --(PR.com)-- On Saturday, May 11, 2013, 500 runners and walkers, as well as Mt. Washington community members, leaders, students and visitors are expected to follow the black and yellow brick road to the First Annual Emerald of Mt. Washington 5K Race and Festival. This effort, the fifth installment of the PopUp! Pittsburgh series, was created to highlight a neighborhood in collaboration with its residents and businesses.

PopUp! Pittsburgh is modeled on the “Pop Up City” concept which seeks to momentarily revitalize a neighborhood by developing a temporary, low-cost initiative that has the ability to surprise, provoke, and entertain city residents and visitors in ways that change perceptions about the places where they occur. PopUp! Pittsburgh is produced by Leadership Development Initiative XX, a program of Leadership Pittsburgh Inc. This year’s event is designed to surprise, engage and bring together residents, and their friends and families, to appreciate the neighborhood’s assets and envision its potential.

Ladies, gentlemen, and munchkins of all ages are invited to participate in the 5K race, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and routes through the Emerald View Park system and Mt. Washington business district. All visitors are welcome to participate in the Festival staged in Grandview Park immediately following the race, complete with Muchkinland kids’ activities, live music and local food vendors, visits from the Pirates Parrot and Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and nature walks through Emerald View Park.

Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) has been the host of several pop up events throughout the city of Pittsburgh, as current LDI participants form teams to implement a Community Impact Project. In addition to meeting a need in the community, the projects provide significant learning experiences for the team members, helping to enhance leadership skills and expose the participants to community leaders and issues that matter to Pittsburghers.
