SC County and McKim & Creed Win Award for Engineering Excellence

Charlotte, NC, November 15, 2013 --(PR.com)-- York County, South Carolina and McKim & Creed, Inc. in Charlotte have received an engineering excellence honors award for a water main installation beneath the Catawba River. The 30-inch, 1,000-ft.-long pipe was installed using horizontal directional drill, and is part of the regionalization of York County’s Eastern Water System. The new water main enables the county to meet current and future water demands, reduce dependence on water purchased from other utilities, and provide system redundancy.

The award was presented on November 7 by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina. The engineering excellence awards program is an annual competition that honors and recognizes engineering and surveying firms for projects that demonstrate the highest degree of achievement, value and ingenuity.

The new water main provides an alternative means of supply to the Eastern Water System, and gives York County a direct, large-diameter connection that provides financial stability, adequate supply to meet projected demands until 2030, and redundancy for water systems north of the Catawba River.

By installing the water main under the river, engineers were able to avoid unsightly utility bridge infrastructure, and save time and money in construction costs. The horizontal directional drill was completed in seven weeks for a cost of $3.2 million, which was 9.4% percent under budget. The directional drill also ensured that the natural habitats of native wildlife such as bald eagles and osprey were not disturbed.
