Arnold Machine Builds Successful Custom Automation System for Nucor Steel

New custom fence post automation system for largest U.S. steel manufacturer promises large-scale, efficient fence post production.

Tiffin, OH, August 20, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Arnold Machine Inc. (AMI), a premier full-service designer and manufacturer of industrial equipment and services, has built and successfully implemented a new proprietary automation system for custom fence posts for Nucor Steel, the largest manufacturer of steel in the U.S. The technology draws on AMI’s 20-year experience in designing and manufacturing a wide range of custom automation system services for large-scale, efficient fence post production.

As a celebration of the successful project with Nucor, AMI has made available a collection of videos and graphics detailing the processes and operation of the new custom fence post automation system.

AMI’s new custom fence post automation system features completely automated production, from initial loading and cutting to final painting and bundling. The production process requires minimal manual attention and increases turnaround time.

The partnership with Nucor Steel began once Nucor approached AMI for a fence post automation system. Prior to this, Nucor had produced non-painted, non-spaded posts entirely in-house. The challenge for AMI was to build a fully automated system that could produce painted, spaded fence post that could be quickly implemented. The basic requirements were that the system be able to receive 60-ft lengths of raw material, cut to 5- to 10-ft-long piece in 1 foot increments, fully paint a base color and a 4-in-long tip, and easily change paint colors. The process needed to bundle spaded and non-spaded product in specified bundles, process 6 tons of spaded product and 12 tons of non-spaded product per hour. The system also had to function with a minimal number of operators in a building with temperatures ranging from -20°F to +100°F.

AMI’s design engineering team responded to the challenge by developing an automation system concept that would include the ability to easily change paint colors, insert spades at various points, bundle both spaded and non-spaded products, switch between product types, and adjust operations based on temperature. The entire system can be overseen and operated with only five operators.

“We are thrilled to work with a company such as Nucor on such a vital project,” said Zach Arnold, President of AMI. “This type of challenge is a strong indication of the results we aim for with our automation systems.”

The partnership with Nucor illustrates AMI’s dedication to pioneering new methods and systems in order to meet the unique needs of clients across the manufacturing industry. By operating to Nucor’s specific requirements, AMI’s new system has wide-ranging implications across the steel industry.
