Virginia Beach Schools and Parents Are on the Look-Out for Head Lice as Schools Prepare to Launch the 2014-2015 School Year

According to Wendy Beck, owner of LiceDoctors, each year at the end of camp and the beginning of school, there are significant outbreaks of head lice in Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads, Virginia and surrounding areas.

Virginia Beach, VA, September 03, 2014 --(PR.com)-- As families prepare for the opening of school in Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, LiceDoctors Head Lice Removal Service advises parents to be vigilant about head lice. The months of September and October are peak months for the incidence of head lice.

According to Wendy Beck, owner of LiceDoctors, every year with the end of camp and the beginning of school, there are significant outbreaks of head lice. "This year we are seeing an increase in the incidence of head lice among school age children in Virginia Beach and surrounding areas including Newport News, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and other areas around the Tidewater region," reports Ms. Beck, who has been treating families with head lice for 19 years.

Ms. Beck attributes the increase largely to a growing resistance to the chemical treatments. "Everyday our in-home lice treatment service is called to remove nits and live bugs from children who have been treated unsuccessfully with the lice pesticides. Often the parents think that their children are then lice and nit-free, but if any nits are left in the hair, the case is not finished." In addition, school nurses check students' heads for head lice when they return to school, often detecting cases that have been festering over the summer. Not everyone has symptoms with head lice.

The best way to screen your child for head lice is to take him or her outside in the bright light. While lice scoot from the light and are difficult to find, the nits (eggs) attach to the hair shaft and have a translucent shell which reflects light in the sun. As lice can be difficult to detect, parents may want to contact a professional.
