The Reducer of the Future

Varvel SpA, well-established Bologna-based company, awarded Horizon 2020 call for the manufacturing of a “smart reducer” able to operate without lubricant.

Bologna, Italy, October 23, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Varvel SpA, well-established Bologna-based company specialized in designing speed reducers and variators, was selected for Horizon 2020, an European programme securing the necessary funds for a new cutting edge project. The news was received with great satisfaction within Varvel SpA, that will be celebrating on next year the sixtieth anniversary of foundation, occurred in 1955. Such award – obtained in Italy by 20 companies only, of which just two are located in the Bologna area – will grant the necessary resources to start an innovative project for the production of a “smart reducer” prototype that will be able to operate without lubricant.

The project was born from the great attention Varvel SpA pays to the environmental issues – the same involvement that made the company standing on a national level as a socially responsible company. This policy is further pursued in the annual publication of a Sustainability Report, where with great transparency, Varvel SpA shows all the stakeholders every distinguishing aspects.

A great success in being selected for Horizon 2020 next step programme, as access will be gained to European funds - earmarked to research and development projects for a two year time and over €1 million worth.

No doubt the objective of an innovative product launching allows Varvel to open new markets, especially in view that similar challenge are not yet undertaken by the qualified competition.

This project comes at the end of a path already begun ten years ago under the research and development banner, as attested by the many initiatives carried out with universities and research institutions.

Horizon 2020 and European Community participation are the natural evolution of a development Varvel reached with a strong commitment over the decades. This crucial commitment allowed the company to propose the innovative project to Horizon2020, which with an overall fund of €77 billions for the 2014-2020 period is the EU’s main instrument for research and development financing in Europe.

The impact of a new “smart reducer” able of working without lubricant would open new scenarios within the power transmission world and mechanics in general. It will bring high benefits in resource and machinery management, as well as the environmental impact reduction. Performances, reliability and product life-cycle will also benefit future scenarios that are already taking form in Varvel’s R&D.
