Rewarding Others for Community Service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Contributing to the greater good strengthens the community.

Rahway, NJ, January 16, 2015 --(PR.com)-- As we look to 2015 and the challenges our communities face, it is important to consider how community service can help us feel more connected to our neighbors and our neighborhoods. On January 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, The Gateway Family YMCA – Rahway Branch encourages residents of the surrounding community to honor Dr. King’s legacy by not only giving back and supporting our neighbors, but by reflecting on how each act of community service is a small part of a larger movement to make things better.

At the Rahway Branch, members of the community who bring in a can of food to donate to The Gateway Family YMCA’s housing programs are invited to participate in a free family swim from 1:00-3:00pm. “Inviting the community in our doors and celebrating the fact that they are providing food for the hungry is a very small way of expressing our gratitude,” stated Colleen Clayton, Senior Director of Marketing & MIS.

At Ys across the nation, more than 600,000 volunteers provide crucial support that strengthens our communities. “The Y depends on the service of others to make an impact in our neighborhoods,” stated Ed Soder, Associate Branch Executive. In Rahway, the Y relies on the help of volunteers to accomplish its mission and provide a welcoming place for everyone to learn, grow and thrive. Through the support of community partners and donors, the Y is able to provide financial assistance for programs and services to those in need.

The Gateway Family YMCA – Rahway Branch is just completing a $3.4 million, 16,938 square foot renovation of the facility, including renovations of existing areas, and expansion into 3 floors that haven’t been in use since the mid-1980’s. “We’re excited to bring the community into our newly renovated facility to enjoy a family swim as a thank you for their donation,” added Lindsay Sudia, Membership Engagement Director. The Rahway Branch is also offering membership specials and incentives to those planning a healthier 2015.
