LiceDoctors of Baltimore Educates Families About Head Lice Detection and Removal

LiceDoctors Lice Treatment and Nit Removal Service of Baltimore demystifies common myths about head lice that are frequently presented to them by clients. LiceDoctors' goal is to educate the public with the hopes of enabling people to prevent lice infestations in their families. LiceDoctors has successfully treated nearly 150,000 children and adults using their physician-developed, pesticide-free lice treatment protocol.

Baltimore, MD, May 14, 2015 --(PR.com)-- As head lice have grown to be a common-place occurrence for families across the U.S. so have the number of misconceptions and myths about head lice become that much more frequent. LiceDoctors, a leading head lice removal service making house calls to families in the Baltimore area, cites several head lice facts and clarifies myths with the intention of educating the public on this all too common nuisance.

According to Wendy Beck, owner of LiceDoctors, head lice are wingless insects about the size of a sesame seed or smaller. They have six legs with tiny claws and live only on human scalps. They range in color from light brown to dark brown. On the scalp, they appear translucent with a brownish tinge; when placed on a white background, they are brown. Lice (bugs) are difficult to spot because they scoot away from the light. Nits (eggs) are teardrop shaped—round on one end and pointy on the other and they are glued to the hair shaft and have to be pulled off.

Beck goes on to say, "Lice are highly contagious and reproduce at a rate of 6-10 eggs per day per louse.Head lice feed on human blood from the scalp up to 3 times daily and will die within 36 hours when off the head. The incidence of lice and the severity of the individual cases have increased over the past several years due to an increasing resistance among lice to the chemical shampoos/pesticides. Today’s lice are so hearty/resistant as to be dubbed 'super lice.'"

Beck explains that following are some common myths about head lice that are not true.

Lice jump, hop, and fly from head to head.
Lice like dirty hair.
Pets carry lice.
"Just in case" chemical treatments are safe.
Chemical treatments work as advertised.
Lice carry disease.
Bedding, toys, and clothes should be bagged for 2 weeks.
Hot water and laundry in dryer will eradicate lice.

According to Beck, if you are vigilant, you may be able to find a lice infestation before it become severe.
