Senior Prom Celebrated at The Gateway Family YMCA

The Gateway Family YMCA - Five Points Branch Celebrates Seniors

Union, NJ, July 09, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Gateway Family YMCA –Five Points Branch hosted a “Senior Prom” this Spring, celebrating the senior members and their vibrant, healthy lives. The Five Points Branch, located at 201 Tucker Avenue, Union, NJ, provides specialized programs focusing on Families, Youth, Teens and Senior members, along with traditional YMCA programs and child care. “Much like our youth and teen members, our seniors begin to see the Y almost as a second home. There is a great sense of belonging here for them and I wanted to create an environment in which they are associating coming to the Y as a place to do something fun and enjoyable to better their lives. It’s these types of events that allow the seniors to feel comfortable and create lasting memories,” stated Thomas Galuppo, Health Living Director.

The Senior Prom was designed to celebrate senior members with an afternoon of music, dancing food and good company. Approximately 50 people attended this year’s Senior Prom in the YMCA’s gymnasium. There was a DJ playing a variety of music, including popular line dances and songs on request. A Prom King and Queen were crowned by the fellow attendees at the end of the event. Props were available for photos, and members were happily commenting on the posts to the Y’s Facebook page. One YMCA member, Linda Greer, stated, “Thank you to the wonderful directors and staff for a great afternoon at the Senior Prom! It was so much fun. I love dancing and had a blast! You guys know how to party.”

For those who attended the prom, there were a lot great memories made, friendships forged and community bonding. “The event definitely brought our seniors back in time and made them feel young again,” added Danielle Cioffi, District Executive Director. “So many seniors went out of their way to let me know they had a blast and looked forward to more events like this at the branch.”

Admission to the prom consisted of a $2 donation to the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign, which provides financial assistance for YMCA membership and programs. “Many of the members who came to the events attend our Active Older Adult and Water Exercise classes on a regular basis, and many of their friendships started right here at our YMCA,” added Jessica Samolewicz, Associate Executive Director.
