Proactive Management Key to Career Success in 2008

Today's economy and competitive workforce requires employees to be more proactive in managing their careers.

Detroit, MI, December 20, 2007 --(PR.com)-- In a recent survey of their clients, career marketing firm Words For Hire discovered that more than 92% of professionals fail to proactively manage their careers.

Amidst fears of reorganization and global outsourcing many workers know that they should do more to protect their income but never put their plans into action. “Intellectually people understand that they should not wait until a layoff to actively manage their career but their plans get lost in the day to day activities of work, family and life,” comments Karen Swim, President and CEO of Words For Hire. Swim comments further, “Every week we have talented professionals seeking our help after a layoff. Many knew for weeks or even months that their jobs were not secure but they failed to take any action believing that somehow they might be spared. Doing nothing is the biggest mistake that anyone can make even in a great economy.”

Swim advises all of her clients to do a career check up no less than one time per year. “The only way to achieve the career you want, and the life you want is to plan for it. People spend more time planning a two week vacation than they do planning their lifetime income,” says Swim.

Fifty years ago we trusted those in positions of power to take care of us. Today smart consumerism is not limited to buying decisions but applies holistically to every area of our life. We have a responsibility to ourselves for every aspect of our working life. To give that power completely to an employer is the worst thing that you can do.

The savvy career professional will create opportunities for career growth in their present companies and in outside organizations. They will not wait for a year end review to demonstrate their value and they certainly won’t show up for that meeting without their own facts, data and plan. Most importantly they will make time to plan their career, and actively manage it to reach short and long term goals.
