)-- Riverside Boutique Resort, Vang Vieng, was presented with a Green Hotel Award during the close of the 2016 ASEAN Tourism Forum held in Manila on January 22.
The ten ASEAN-member countries —Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam— are working together to promote the ASEAN as a quality single destination. The establishment of the ASEAN tourism standards is part of the effort to support integration in the tourism sector and to build an integrated economic community in South-East Asia.
Hotels need to meet the following major criteria and requirements in order to qualify for the Green Hotel Award: Environmental policy and action for hotel operation; Use of green products; Collaboration with the community and local organizations; Human resource development; Solid waste management; Energy efficiency; Water efficiency; Air quality management (indoor and outdoor); Noise pollution control; Wastewater treatment and management; and Toxic and chemical substance disposal management.
“In Laos more than anywhere else in South-East Asia, tourism needs to be eco-friendly and sustainable if it is to benefit local communities,” said Denis Simonnet, General Manager of Riverside Boutique Resort. “We are therefore delighted that our efforts to preserve the environment and promote sustainable tourism in Vang Vieng are recognized through this award.”
