Award-Winning Documentary, Alive Inside, Changes Communities by Sharing the Healing Power of Music

Sacramento, CA, January 17, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Alive Inside, an award-winning documentary showing music’s remarkable ability to reach the souls of those living with dementia, comes to Folsom, California. On January 24th at 5:30 pm at the Jill Solberg Theater – Folsom High School joins our sponsors: Visiting Angels of Cameron Park, Elder Care Management, Empire Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, Folsom Community Center, Folsom Care Center and Snowline Hospice as they host a free presentation of this award-winning documentary.

The film Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short.

This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia) and musician Bobby McFerrin. An uplifting exploration of music and the mind, Alive Inside’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.

The film has fostered an explosion of Music & Memory facilities across the country, now numbering over 2000. From an outpouring of interest, Rossato-Bennett created the Alive Inside Foundation to further expand the vision of bringing music to elders by including and empowering youth to become music detectives to find the songs that spark memories while also learning about aging and cultivating empathy. Both the giver and the receiver benefit from this compassionate exchange.

Angels of Cameron Park, Elder Care Management, Empire Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, Folsom Community Center, Folsom Care Center and Snowline have all embraced the power of music and offer the Alive Inside program to their patients. Here is just one experience a daughter has shared after watching Alive Inside and giving her mother the resources to listen to music. Her mother changed, drastically, for the better. “I took her to the doctor and brought the headsets with me. I explained to him that music was her medicine and told him to watch. I put the headsets on, and my mom’s face lit up. Her facial expression changed from anxiety to excitement, and she was off in another world singing away. He was amazed at how quickly she responded and agreed to take her off all her meds.” The mother has been living with Alzheimer’s for over 10 years. Alive Inside, along with the program Music and Memory, has changed her life.

As our population continues to age, more and more people will be affected by Alzheimer's and other dementias. Until a cure is found, we must do what we can to impact the lives of these elders and their caregivers. Today they number in the millions. The Alive Inside Foundation is inspiring whole communities to band together to make a difference in a way never tried before.

The Alive Inside Foundation is working to inspire youth and entire communities to bring music to elders. Teachers, pastors, and volunteers are banding together to recreate the magic seen in Alive Inside, using music as a bridge and creating healing intergenerational connections. The results are transformative, with the students, the communities, and the elders benefiting.

P.S. Bring plenty of Kleenex.
