Abstract

The United States combats anticompetitive conduct through the efforts of federal enforcers (such as the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission), state enforcers and civil litigants. These public and private enforcement groups play complementary roles. For example, private antitrust class action lawsuits seeking treble damages often follow investigations by U.S. enforcers probing potential antitrust violations in a particular industry.
