Local Employers Seek to Fill 330+ Jobs at Year’s Second City-Wide Job Fair

Marlborough job fair connects local employers to jobseekers, shows strong labor market.

Marlborough, MA, October 25, 2018 --(PR.com)-- More than 330 jobs at 23 local companies were on offer at this year’s second Marlborough Works! Job Fair, held at the Courtyard by Marriott in Marlborough today.

Close to 120 jobseekers attended the free event, which was organized by the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) as part of Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s ongoing efforts to increase local employment. About 50 jobseekers also took part in one of three free Interview Workshops, run by MassHire Framingham Career Center, where they learned approaches to interviewing and selling themselves, before heading into the job fair to meet with employers.

Hiring representatives from a number of local manufacturers, retailers, hotels and various other companies looked to fill entry-level and mid-level positions. GE Healthcare Life Sciences, Quest Diagnostics, Apex Entertainment, Target, Macy’s, The TJX Companies, IPG Photonics and Stanley Steemer were among the employers, many of which were looking to hire for a dozen or more local jobs.

Held annually since 2012, the Marlborough Works! Job Fair became a semi-annual event last year, when employers expressed interest in having separate fairs for positions requiring different levels of education and experience. In May, MEDC and the city held this year’s first installment of the now-bi-annual job fair, which focused on life sciences, biotechnology, high technology and other industries that require higher levels of education and more years of work experience. Today’s event centered around service, retail, hospitality, manufacturing and other industries that typically hire for positions that require little-to-no experience and, often, no more than high school education.

“Over the years, we have adjusted the format of the job fair in order to better match employers and job seekers,” said Mayor Arthur Vigeant. “This year, we broke up the fairs by job levels to give residents and other job seekers a better opportunity to learn about jobs that fit their experience and skill level. It is always great to see a large turnout at the job fair and we hope some job seekers found the right match.”

“When moving or expanding to a new location, companies want to know that they will find the right talent to run their organizations,” said MEDC Executive Director Meredith Harris. “Similarly, when people consider relocating to a new city, one of the very first considerations is job availability. Marlborough can offer both of these groups the peace of mind that they have a high chance of finding what they are looking for here.”

“We like coming to these local job fairs, because they give us local people who are close by,” said Quest Diagnostics Manager of Specimen Processing, Kathy McAvenia, whose company was recruiting for more than 40 job openings at the job fair. “We are a 24-7 corporation, so we need to have people that are available to come in the snow or in the rain. Most of the time we’re looking for third shift employees and living close by really helps out.”

More than 100 companies have moved to or expanded in Marlborough over the past six years, bringing about 7,000 jobs to the city.
