NPSA Launches Series of Technical Studies

The National Portable Storage Association is conducting a series of technical studies to determine the wind load, snow load, and burn rate of containerized storage units.

Kansas City, MO, April 17, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, is conducting a series of technical studies on portable storage containers. Specifically, these technical studies seek to determine the burn rate, snow loads, wind and hurricane resistance of containerized storage units. The first in the series of studies should be published in late summer 2008.

“These technical studies are vital, especially to vendors in states where fire, snow, tornadoes and hurricanes are prevalent,” said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA. “Some states, for example, call for vendors to unstack containers when hurricanes are approaching for safety purposes. This can be inconvenient and costly. Data demonstrating exactly how much wind stacked up containers can safely withstand will be helpful to the industry.”

Containerized storage is heavier than the average vehicle, but industry data has not been available to share with community decision-makers whose duty it is to keep citizens safe. The NPSA reports a similar issue with regard to snow loads. Containers, Finnessy explained, are designed to withstand weight on four corners, but may not withstand as much weight on the roof. The technical study will determine how much snow a container rooftop can safely bear.

The burn rate study will answer two questions. The first question is: If a fire starts inside a container, how long does it take to spread outside the container and to the surrounding areas? It will also answer the question: How long would it take for a container to burn from the outside in? This will be helpful to vendors who sell containerized storage for use at oil and gas companies by defining how close the containers can be stored to flammable zones.
