Parents Concerned About Non-Organic Foods Should Consider Clothing, Too

Non-organic cotton and synthetic fibers are often laden with harmful, toxic chemicals retained from both the farming and manufacturing processes of the clothes.

St. Louis, MO, April 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In an article published by Natural Life Magazine, "Organic Fibers: Making the Progression from Food to Fiber" Ed Mass, Founder and President of Yes It’s Organic, explains "Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It absorbs. Whatever it absorbs may get into your bloodstream and internal organs. And that includes the chemicals retained in textiles."

If someone is choosing organic and natural foods, they probably want healthier foods for their family without harmful toxins. And they’re aware of environmental damage to natural resources caused by non-organic farming. But, these concerns are also applicable to clothing, bedding, towel and other textile choices.

Non-organic cotton production is one of the highest users of insecticides. During the manufacturing process, non-organic textiles use toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and other known carcinogens and skin irritants.

In an excerpt from the Natural Life Magazine article, Mass explains, "Your mattress may also contain polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), chemicals widely used as flame retardants, which are known to cause cancer and are suspected of disrupting hormones."

No wonder more parents are seeking organic and eco friendly clothing and textile options for their families, especially their babies and toddlers.

Babies are very sensitive to environmental factors. They can develop severe allergic reactions to chemicals and products used in non-organic and synthetic clothing. Mass says customers have expressed their concern about new rashes and allergies in their children. Some of his patrons have explained they or their child has multiple chemical sensitivities (mcs). That’s why they are seeking organic and eco friendly products from his store.

When asked how to reduce our contact with harmful toxins beyond food, Mass said, "I think it’s important to consider the health impacts of our everyday items, including our clothes, bedding, towels, etc. These things are in constant contact with our absorbing skin. So, I’d say become educated about the facts and use buying power to influence change. Purchase organic and eco friendly products, but be aware of scams and make sure to look for certifications."

Organic cotton provides the comfort and softness of non-organic cotton. It also provides peace of mind for concerned parents. Mass reminds us, though, that it is important to choose Certified Organic and Eco Friendly Products. "We take this very seriously at Yes It’s Organic. We offer resources for our patrons, like definitions of our organic and eco friendly certifications and articles about organic farming and the eco friendliness of different fabrics." says Mass, "We want our patrons to feel confident they are doing the right thing for their family and the planet."
