Baltimore, MD, August 20, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Humanity First surgical team to Ghana continues its mission to help local doctors and improve the quality of surgical care in Africa. The team started its mission this year on August 5th, 2009 at the Korle Bu hospital, the main teaching hospital in Ghana's capital, Accra. After two days of operating, the team moved to Asakore on August 8th and 9th.

The 12 member team consists of pediatric and general surgeons, an anesthesiologist, physician assistant, nurses, surgical techs, and medical students. Three days ago, the team showed its dedication and commitment to their mission by giving up one of their precious off days to help a doctor at a hospital in Kokofu. They received a call late in the day indicating the doctor had run out of medications and had a full schedule of operations the next day. Sacrificing their day off, the group unanimously decided to drive to the hospital the next day and spend the day teaching and helping the local doctor.

Yesterday, August 13th, the team moved to a hospital in Daboase, a city in southwestern Ghana. On arrival, the team unloaded their equipment and setup the two operating rooms with supplies brought over from the US. After examining the surgical patients that were admitted to the hospital, the team started operating later the same afternoon.

So far, the team has performed 21 operations and plans to do about 20 more in the remaining days of their surgical mission.
