Arboreus Offers Online Preparation Tools for EU Recruitment Exams

The European Union's Personnel Selection Office is in the process of recruiting 250 Romanian and Bulgarian citizens as assistants to work at the institutions of the EU. These jobs are especially valuable in the current economic climate, and the salaries are very generous as compared to Central European standards. All this means that competition will be fierce and preparation extremely important. Luckily, there are affordable online tools just for this purpose.

Brussels, Belgium, September 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Earning 2500 € a month? Now there is a unique chance for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens to become EU officials: the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) has announced exams to fill in 250 posts. Competitions for these jobs are due to be held from October 2009. More than 3700 people applied, so competition will be fierce - it’s time to start preparing.

The jobs are offered at institutions of the European Union (EU) and represent excellent opportunities for people whose work does not usually get paid very well in Romania and Bulgaria. These include secretarial work alongside higher-ranking officials and various administrative assistant positions (filing clerk, office clerk) in the European Commission and the European Parliament.

The place of employment is mostly in Brussels and Luxembourg.

Why is this competition so special?

After EU enlargements, citizens of new Member States only need to compete at the exams with one another, and not with all EU 27 Member States – so, for Romania/Bulgaria, this is the very last chance to have an ‘easy’ competition.

These exams are also worth taking because the EU will overhaul its selection methods from 2010, and there is little information about what to expect. The advantage of the current system is that it is well-know and there are a lot of resources to help candidates prepare.

What is offered to those who are elected to the competition?

Those who pass the recruitment exams can be recruited as permanent EU officials with contracts of unlimited duration at the institutions of the European Union, such as the European Commission or European Parliament or others. Salaries for secretaries and assistants at institutions of the European Union start at around 2500 euros, with allowances for relocation to Brussels, schooling allowance and childcare allowance - benefit package is quite generous.

What are these recruitment competitions like?

The recruitment process comprises four stages:

- Admission test: multiple choice questions, assessing candidates’ knowledge of the EU, their verbal skills (understanding and interpreting texts) and their logical skills (interpreting economic data, table, charts) in English, French, or German.

- Written test: a practical test involving the preparation of a Word document and a assessment of writing skills in one’s main language (Romanian or Bulgarian). The topic can be as simple as the last book you read, or to describe what the EU does to combat terrorism.

- Oral exam: not a job interview, focuses on your work experience and how you would perform in an international setting.

If successful, the candidate is put on a reserve list, followed by a recruitment interview, just like for any other job in the business world.

6) What are the chances of success?

EU recruitment is very competitive, especially in the current competition. For 250 positions, more than 3700 people applied. The admission tests serve as a screening exam which only a small number of candidates will pass. In this competition, around 600 people will be allowed in the next round.

This means that the admission tests will be the most important part of the process: only every sixth candidate will succeed here.

7) How to prepare for the exams?

The most important thing when preparing for the exams is dedication to taking it seriously. There are thousands of people wishing to enter EU public service, competition is fierce. An in-depth knowledge of EU affairs (EU institutions, decision-making, policies, history) is required, along with skills to pass the 'verbal and numerical reasoning' tests, for which, among others, their website offers online real-time practice to all candidates. Drafting skills and high level linguistic skills are also necessary.
