Anderson University Graduates First Online Student

Anderson, SC, December 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Anderson University student, Sheila Day, graduated in December without ever stepping foot on campus. Day is Anderson’s first online-only graduate. She completed her Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree from over 200 miles away. Day is an example of the growing need for online programs in higher education. While working full-time, Day was not able to travel one and a half hours each way for a traditional class. Anderson was able to meet her needs as a non-traditional adult student.

Online courses provide the flexibility to study and learn when it is opportune for the student. While taking an online course is convenient, many falsely believe that online courses are not as rigorous as face-to-face instruction. Day is quick to defend Anderson’s programs. “A lot of people assume that an online class is easy. Not true. It is a struggle and you must stay on top of your assignments and test schedules.” Along with online assignments, Day was required to video speeches and give presentations as if she were in class.

The Bachelor of Criminal Justice is just one of Anderson’s four online degree programs. Other online degree programs include the Bachelor of Human Services, Master of Business Administration, Master of Ministry and the soon-to-be Bachelor of Business Administration. Anderson also offers general education courses online to help students fulfill graduation requirements.

In Sept. 2004, Anderson partnered with The Learning House, Inc. (TLH), a comprehensive online education solutions partner located in Louisville, KY, to develop online courses. Together, Anderson and TLH have been working to create a complete online campus environment with features such as customized course content, 24/7 technical support and other various academic resources. This partnership has allowed Anderson to successfully launch high-value online courses without sacrificing its on-campus resources.

Online course offerings reinforce Anderson’s mission to be a premier teaching university where liberal arts, professional studies, and graduate programs thrive within a distinctively Christian community of faculty, staff and students dedicated to learning and service. Online education enables Anderson to spread its mission of delivering quality education and commitment to its students, the extended community and well beyond Anderson, S.C.
