Shifting User Preferences and Enhancements to Yellow.com.eg’s Arabic Site Show Interesting Results for 2009

Among search categories, hotels retained its number one ranking with over 80,000 searches on Yellow.com.eg in 2009. With more than 80,000 searches in 2009 restaurants jumped to second place in 2009 from fourth place in 2008. However, the search category schools came in the third place, while banks dropped two places to fourth place. Furthermore, cars fell out of the top 10, while pharmacies entered the top 10 for the first, landing in tenth position.

Cairo, Egypt, February 07, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Searches on Yellow.com.eg revealed a number interesting shifts in user preferences in 2009 for Egypt Yellow Pages Ltd, the Local Search Company.

Among search categories, hotels retained its number one ranking with over 80,000 searches on Yellow.com.eg in 2009. With more than 80,000 searches in 2009 restaurants jumped to second place in 2009 from fourth place in 2008. However, the search category schools came in the third place, while banks dropped two places to fourth place. Furthermore, cars fell out of the top 10, while pharmacies entered the top 10 for the first, landing in tenth position.

Just like hotels, HP retained its top slot as the most searched business on Yellow.com.eg in 2009, breaking the 4,000 search mark. DHL, Western Union, and telecommunications giants Vodafone and Raya ranked, respectively, second through fifth, and all fell in the 3,000-4,000 search range. CIB surpassed HSBC, as the most searched bank in 2009, ranking in sixth and seventh positions, respectively. The most surprising development in business searches was that three popular eateries rounded out the top 10. In order of ranking, Cilantro, KFC, and Pizza Hut all broke into the top 10 for the first time.

An interesting development in 2009 was that Arabic-language version of Yellow.com.eg is receiving greater activity in relation to the English-language version. Usage of the Arabic site increased from 40% in 2008 to 45.8% in 2009, nearly reaching parity with English-language site, which garnered 54.2% of total searches on Yellow.com.eg. However, Egypt Yellow Pages Ltd does not attribute this to changing user preferences on Yellow.com.eg. “This is a direct result of enhancing the Arabic search logic, which now produces better and more relevant results,” said Marc Lambert, Regional Managing Director for Egypt Yellow Pages Ltd.
