Mechdyne, Raytheon and Rockwell Collins Demonstrating Collaborative CAD Review Sessions at the Defense Manufacturing Conference 2010

Marshalltown, IA, December 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Mechdyne Corporation is partnering with Raytheon and Rockwell Collins to demonstrate a new technology to interact with and share computer-aided design (CAD) data across remote collaborative immersive environments at the Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC), November 29 to December 2, 2010, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mechdyne’s Conduit™ advanced visualization software provides the framework for this solution that can shorten the design cycle by supporting remote design reviews and interactions.

Used in conjunction with a desktop CAD application and Mechdyne’s immersive display systems, Conduit provides users the ability to load CAD models on one system, and share them with users in other locations. Because this new solution allows all parties to interact and discuss a design in real time, Conduit will enable users to improve design innovations through virtual prototypes, create quicker design iterations with fewer hardware prototypes, allow for more robust fielded design, and provide more predictable product performance.

"Mechdyne was a valuable technology partner in developing a commercial solution for the difficult task of communicating between multiple users in a multi-CAD collaborative environment," says Jack Harris, Director of Advanced Manufacturing Technology at Rockwell Collins.

A live demonstration of this new collaborative capability, will take place between Raytheon’s and Rockwell Collins’ booths at DMC 2010. “We targeted DMC 2010 to be the first public showing of this technology,” says Matt Szymanski, VP of Products for Mechdyne’s Software Division. “Since we worked with Raytheon and Rockwell on this project, we wanted the defense manufacturing sector to be the first to see this capability unveiled.”

NX™ from Siemens will be utilized to load a CAD assembly containing parts designed from several suppliers. The demonstration will highlight how each member of the supply chain can be “virtually” present during a design review to see how the sub-assemblies fit together and determine if design flaws are present. In addition to Conduit, the Mechdyne-developed 3D Review Station will be one of the display systems used for the collaborative demonstration.

Mechdyne’s Conduit software was extended to meet the specific remote collaboration needs defined by members of a collaborative, industry/educational partnership, including: Mechdyne, Raytheon, Rockwell Collins, PDES Inc., SCRA, InTolerance, and the Virtual Reality Applications Center at Iowa State University. The purpose of this multi-phase effort was to improve performance in the area of product/system sustainment.

The extensions to Conduit grew out of discussions, research, and user-studies, which took place with the team members. With its newly enhanced collaborative features, team members anticipate that Conduit will be utilized by manufacturers to shorten the design cycle and provide a means for prime contractors to work throughout their supply chain to design components more efficiently, work more effectively, travel less, and result in fewer design flaws.

About DMC
DMC is the nation’s largest forum for scientists, technologists, engineers, managers, leaders and policy makers in the defense manufacturing industrial base. The meeting is the product of a partnership of the Military Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense.

The 2010 DMC will be hosted by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Missile Defense Agency and will address the conference theme of removing the barriers to "Achieving an Innovation, Responsive and Sustainable National Security Industrial Base."

All of the military departments, defense agencies, many non-defense agencies, industry and academia will participate in this seminal national event; for both defense and non-defense related manufacturing technology development and application.
