Melanne Verveer and Mei Xu Receive 2012 Honor

Raleigh, NC, March 04, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Monica Smiley, publisher and CEO of Enterprising Women magazine (http://www.enterprisingwomen.com), has announced that Melanne Verveer, U.S. ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues, and Mei Xu, co-founder and president of Chesapeake Bay Candle and creator and CEO of Blissliving Home, will be inducted into the Enterprising Women Hall of Fame during the Hall of Fame luncheon at the 2012 Enterprising Women of the Year Awards celebration on Monday, March 12 and Tuesday, March 13 at the Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the magazine’s highest honor, reserved for women who have devoted a lifetime to building dynamic businesses or vital nonprofit organizations and giving back to the women business owners’ community in significant ways, making a tremendous difference in the lives of others.

Verveer, director of the Department of State’s office on global women’s issues, is responsible for the coordination of foreign policy activities relating to the political, economic and social advancement of women around the world. Previously, Verveer created and served as the chair and co-CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership, an international nonprofit dedicated to protecting and promoting women’s rights. She also served as assistant to the president and chief of staff to former First Lady Hillary Clinton, as well as led the effort to establish the President’s Interagency Council on Women. Verveer received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Women’s Foreign Policy Group.

Xu established Chesapeake Bay Candle Company, one of the most popular candle brands around the world, in 1994. The company has six global locations and employs more than 2,000 people. In 2007, she launched Blissliving Home, a premium interior lifestyle brand for consumers seeking contemporary art, fashion and design. Xu supports a variety of charitable and diplomatic organizations, including the Children’s National Medical Center, the American Red Cross, Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the U.S. State Department, the World Affairs Council, the U.S.-China Business Council, the Young Presidents Organization and the Society of Fellows at the Aspen Institute.
