Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada and Helping Hands of Vegas Valley Named Nevada Women’s Philanthropy 2012 Grant Finalists

Las Vegas, NV, May 14, 2012 --(PR.com)-- After months of scrutiny, site visits and research Nevada Women’s Philanthropy’s Grant Screening Committee has narrowed this year’s record number of 43 applicants for this year’s $300,000 grant down to two finalists: Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada and Helping Hands of Vegas Valley.

Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada seeks to fund the “Nevada Women’s Philanthropy Veterans Employment Program” and would use the money to cover operating costs such as staff salaries, job training programs, supportive services and job placement.

Helping Hands of Vegas Valley proposes to use the money to enhance its low income senior food and necessities program. The funds from the grant would be used to purchase large items such as a delivery truck, commercial grade refrigerators, freezers and industrial shelving. It would also seek to lease additional warehouse space.

The two organizations will have the next four months to create presentations for NWP’s Grant Hearing on Oct. 2, 2012 where NWP’s membership at large can learn more about each agency and how they intend to spend this year’s $300,000 grant. The runner up will receive a $30,000 NWP Founder’s Grant. This year’s alternate is Best Buddies.

On April 19, 2012 NWP and Salvation Army of Southern Nevada celebrated the completion of the NWP Emergency Shelter rehabilitation project. The $325,000 2011 NWP Grant was used to re-roof and upgrade Salvation Army’s Emergency Homeless Shelter. It created space for an additional 20 beds which translates into 7,300 unique bed nights per year. Past grant recipients include the Rape Crisis Center, NWP Signs of Hope Counseling Center ($350,000); 2009 Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, NWP Children’s Attorneys Project ($325,000); 2008 Public Education Foundation, Empowerment Schools Program ($450,000); 2007 Greater Las Vegas After-School All-Stars, Roundy Elementary School ($320,000).
