Darwin and Palmerston Mayors Send Off Four Daring Adventurers to Cycle Around the Continent

Darwin, Australia, May 31, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Four daring adventurers set off from Darwin today on their bicycles to ride 18,000 kilometres around the Australian mainland before returning to Darwin in December.

Their goal: an amazing cycling tour to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues and raise funds for environmental charity Greenfleet, whose mission is to create a low carbon future for Australia.

Nick Scaife (GB), Tommy Gurr (GB), Jimmy McGee (USA) and Markus Schorn (DE) are undertaking this epic trip, the longest any of them have ever contemplated, to raise enough funds to plant 8,000 native trees.

Speaking for the group, Scaife explained, “We are undertaking this trip because we love this lifestyle. We’ll be spending time in new surroundings and experiencing everything Australian nature has to offer. On top of that, we’re doing it for a good cause to protect what we all find so valuable in the process.”

As she farewelled the intrepid quartet, Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim wished them luck in their journey.

“It’s great to see such motivation from these four men and I’m very proud they are putting their efforts into such a worthwhile cause. I wish them all the best in their venture,” she said.

On their way out of the capital city, the four cyclists also stopped in Palmerston to visit the city’s Sustainability Week celebrations, with Mayor Ian Abbott offering some encouragement.

Mayor Ian Abbott said: “The City of Palmerston is honoured to have the LIFE team drop by our great city, and we’re very proud to support the guys as they take on this mammoth task.”

Greenfleet CEO Sara Gipton said, “The world needs champions who take on tough challenges to bring attention to the environment and climate change.”

“LIFE’s epic adventure is a fantastic way to raise awareness for the environment; and best of all they are using low carbon transport to do so. We’re very pleased to work with them and help make a real difference. The money raised will help create a biodiverse, self-sustaining native forest, that creates habitat for wildlife and also helps tackle climate change.”
