The Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology Holds Third Annual COASTAL 5K/10K Walk/Run and Kiddie K on January 26, 2013

Sponsored by California Bank & Trust, the Family-Friendly Event Supports Children in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA, January 25, 2013 --(PR.com)-- For the third consecutive year, the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP) has organized the Children’s Outreach: Advancing Social Transformation and Learning (COASTAL) 5K/10K Walk/Run and Kiddie K. California Bank & Trust is the 2013 title sponsor of this annual event, which raises funds for GSEP programs that help school-age children in underserved populations reach their full potential.

“Pepperdine’s COASTAL benefit is a great way to help members of our community who are most in need – especially children,” says Betty Rengifo Uribe, California Bank & Trust Executive Vice President. “We’re in our second consecutive year of partnership with Pepperdine’s COASTAL benefit and each year we’ve been impressed by the level of participation and the outpouring of support from the community. It’s a fun, healthy way for Southern Californians to help their neighbors and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

Funds raised will go toward caring for homeless children through GSEP’s partnership with the Union Rescue Mission and Hope Gardens; Provide counseling to families who cannot afford it via the GSEP Community Counseling Clinics; and preparing K-12 teachers for service in urban areas.

In Los Angeles:
• More than 4,000 children from newborn to age 5 do not have a place to sleep. Families with children are one of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population.
• 1 in 5 children has a diagnosable mental illness. Nearly two-thirds of these kids receive little or no help, leading to a decline in school performance, depression, disobedience, and aggression.
• 1 in 3 students will not complete high school, a rate higher among minorities and students with mental health challenges. These students are 3 times more likely to be imprisoned during their lifetime.
