4FUN Project: Assessing  Human  Exposure  to  Chemicals

This is a 3-years project funded  by  the  European Union Seventh's Framework Programme  under  grant  agreement  n° 308440 and coordinated by AEIFORIA.

Fidenza, Italy, March 28, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Starting from the prototype software for exposure assessment developed during the EU FP6 2-‐Fun project, the objectives of the 4FUN project are to further improve this prototype, turn it into a standardised tool (MERLIN-‐Expo), and guarantee its long term technical and economic viability.

The MERLIN-‐Expo tool contains a library of models for exposure assessment coupling environmental multimedia and pharmacokinetic models and allows to build complex scenarios involving several pollution sources, to take into account exposure through multiple pathways, to perform advanced sensitivity and uncertainty analyses, and to conduct exposure assessments for different human populations.

During the project, stakeholder requirements will be identified and an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of existing exposure assessment tools will be conducted. The tool will be subject to a rigorous standardisation, including verification, benchmarking, documentation, and demonstration. To demonstrate the reliability of modelling estimations and the feasibility of building complex realistic scenarios, case studies based on actual datasets will be performed. The improved and standardised software will be delivered, together with supporting documentation and training courses. Finally, based on detailed market research a sustainable business model will be developed.

Consortium partners include: EDF (France), Facilia (Sweden), INERIS (France), VITO (Belgium), ARCHE (Belgium), CSIC (Spain), CVR (Italy), Bearing Point (France), Enviresearch (United Kingdom), GRES (Serbia), Austrian Standards (Austria), Eurelations (Switzerland), and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy).
