Catena Inc. Partners with Cognitect, Inc.; Collaboration Will Develop and Deploy Catena’s Cold Chain Visibility and Data Analytics Platform

Minneapolis, MN, April 23, 2014 --(PR.com)-- According to recent data from computer network EPCglobal, perishable suppliers ship more than 5 billion pallets of temperature-sensitive produce, pharmaceutical and bio-medical products valued at $2.6 trillion per year. This cold chain transportation marketplace is fragmented with information systems and solutions for tracking and monitoring perishable goods, none of which work together fluidly. As a result, transportation providers have difficulty fulfilling delivery requirements, and suppliers aren’t able to track their shipments with the level of detail they need to ensure their shipments arrive intact and in compliance with handling standards. Annually, $35 billion worth of cold chain goods are discarded due to temperature loss and other compliance intrusions during the supply chain journey.

Leading technology companies Catena and Cognitect have partnered to solve this problem. Cognitect’s Datomic database provides cloud-readiness to deal with Catena's global scale and built-in tracking of historical information, making it easy to track goods through the entire cold chain cycle.

An increased pressure by the U.S. and E.U. to establish global regulations - especially around pharmaceutical and perishable food transportation – have established a gap in expectations of transparency. Catena, in partnership with Cognitect, will address this gap by applying functional programming techniques and data visualization methods to create a platform that unifies transportation data and empowers shipping companies to make smart, real-time decisions about their supply chain management.

Founder and CEO of Catena, Inc. Alberto Marzan says, “We realized that the scale of these cold chain visibility challenges would take more than traditional thinking and old-school technology solutions, which is why we selected Cognitect as our technology partner.”

"Companies like Catena choose Cognitect and our Datomic database because they need a database that can scale like NoSQL but provide the query capabilities of SQL.

"Datomic provides that in a fast, simple to manage platform whose collection of built-in features likewise can simplify their application architecture," said Justin Gehtland, CEO of Cognitect.
