NexusTek, Leading IT Services Provider, Uses Technology and Social Media to Help Track Down a Criminal Suspect

Centennial, CO, April 25, 2014 --(PR.com)-- NexusTek, Inc., leading IT consultant and managed services provider in the greater Denver area, helped police to track down a stolen laptop and locate a burglary suspect.

Through the use of advanced system management technology, NexusTek worked in conjunction with its client to provide police with important information that helped them to locate the suspect who allegedly broke into an apartment office to steal computer equipment. This story was featured on Channel 7News Denver, an ABC affiliate.

“NexusTek provides our clients with managed IT services that include monitoring their hardware, software, and database systems,” said Robert Burkholder, CEO of NexusTek, “We’re just happy that we were also able to help them under these stressful and exceptional circumstances.”

Since NexusTek’s client subscribes to its Asset Management Services, special software had been loaded onto their equipment in order to monitor its health and to deliver remote support. As soon as NexusTek was notified of the theft by its client, the company was able to remotely acquire alerts from the equipment to know when it was being used, and then to snap photos of the suspect as he used the stolen laptop.

The Asset Management Services offered by NexusTek allowed the company to determine the public IP address of the laptop when the suspect was on the internet, then request the physical location of the IP address from the ISP. Additionally, using a public GPS service, NexusTek was able to find out the laptop’s geographical coordinates. Through advanced support technology, the company was able to view the laptop remotely and acquire the suspect’s name and email address when he logged into his Facebook account. The photos of the suspect’s apartment captured from the laptop’s webcam resembled the pictures the suspect had posted of his apartment on his public Facebook page.

Using the information provided, police tracked Nicholas Vaughn, 27, of Denver, CO, to an apartment complex near South Dahlia Street and E. Mississippi Avenue.

Because of NexusTek, its client, and the Denver Police Department, Vaughn has been apprehended. According to public records, he has a long criminal history, and has been charged with theft, burglary and possession of burglary tools.
