The Great Stupa at Sanchi is the oldest extant Buddhist sanctuary. The stupa measures 36.8 m in diameter and 16.46m height excluding the railing and chattra. Sanchi is in Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is 46 km north-east of Bhopal. It is a complex of monasteries, stupas and temples dating from the 3rd century BC to the 11th century AD. It was commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus is a simple hemispherical brick structure. It is crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank which is intended to honour and shelter the relics. When it was discovered in 1818 by General Taylor, Sanchi had been abandoned for 600 years. Excavations revealed the ruins of about 50 monuments becoming one of the most remarkable buddhist archaeological discoveries in India.
It is said that Buddha never visited this site during any of his former lives or during his earthly existence, however this Buddhist site is important. Relics of his two chief disciples, Sariputra and Mogallayana, together with the remains of later teachers are enshrined here.
