The Birches Celebrates First Year of Beekeeping with Local Honey Tasting

Clarendon Hills, IL, December 10, 2015 --(PR.com)-- After completing its first season of keeping bees and harvesting honey, The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills, Ill. is hosting a honey tasting on December 10 for staff and residents that will include honey from The Birches, the Lisle Park District, the Bolingbrook Park District and the Birches’ Director of Dining Services’ backyard hive in Lemont.

The tasting will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Birches’ Main Dining Room where participants will sample four varieties of local honey to see which one most pleases their palate.

“It’s a great way to bring attention to local beekeeping and celebrate our first season as beekeepers,” said Birches’ Executive Director Jackie Foss. “It will also be interesting to see how these different types of local honey compare to one another.”

The Birches is one of several local organizations and businesses embracing the farm-to-table movement by keeping hives. Others include park districts in Lisle, Bolingbrook, Naperville, St. Charles and Downers Grove, the Morton Arboretum and the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort. In addition to acquiring three beehives this year, The Birches also purchased three chickens.

“It’s been an exciting year for us,” said Birches Executive Director Jackie Foss. “Both residents and staff have gotten involved, and we’ve learned so much about beekeeping and local food. Now, it’s time to reap the benefits of our work with some delicious honey.”

Since harvesting its honey in September, The Birches also hosted a Honey Raffle in which 44 two-ounce jars of honey were raffled off to raise money for the Richmond Education Gardens and Apiary, a project undertaken by the Clarendon Hills Park Foundation to turn .15 acre of unused public land into an apiary and education gardens filled with native vegetables, fruit trees, herbs, wildflowers, butterfly, wall and rain gardens, and a space for an open classroom.

“We’re happy to support this effort which corresponds so well with what we are doing at The Birches,” said Foss. “I think the Richmond Education Gardens and Apiary will be a great community resource.”
