NAMWOLF Lauds New York Governor David Paterson on Making Commitment to Increase Minority and Women-Owned Business Participation

NAMWOLF is thrilled Governor Patterson’s Executive Order will include minority and women owned law firms.

New York, NY, July 10, 2008 --(PR.com)-- New York Governor David Patterson signed an Executive Order on June 26, 2008 creating more opportunities for minority and women owned businesses to perform work for New York State Agencies. The Executive Order will require New York to hire more minority and women owned debt underwriting firms as co-managers or senior managers, attorneys, and risk managers. Governor Paterson’s Order will be implemented by October, 2008.

Yolanda Coly, the Managing Director of the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF), wrote a letter to Governor Paterson echoing the need for inclusion of minority and women owned law firms in his Executive Order. “In preparing this Executive Order, we are asking that you and your staff include language which makes it clear that legal services are included in the state’s minority and women-owned business policies. Based on our experience with many state agencies, there is a sense that legal services are somehow exempt from the state’s minority and women-owned business purchasing goals.”

Governor Paterson’s Executive Order is targeting the same State Agencies that NAMWOLF found to not utilize minority and women owned firms: New York State Thruway Authority, New York State Housing Finance Agency, and the Empire State Development Corporation.

Coly further stated, “Upon Governor Paterson being sworn in, NAMWOLF issued a statement relaying we are optimistic that Governor Paterson will enhance the opportunities for minority and women owned businesses. Suffice it to say, we are delighted we were correct in our initial assumption.”

NAMWOLF will be holding its fourth Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas on November 13 and 14, 2008. For more information please call 414-277-1139.
