Planeterra Helps Treat Blindness in Tibet
Toronto, Canada, August 21, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Planeterra, G.A.P Adventures’ non-profit foundation, has raised funds to donate to the Seva Canada Society, an international non-governmental organization dedicated to the elimination of preventable and treatable blindness. The goal is to support an eye camp in Tibet.
The eye camp will be held for two weeks in September, during which time doctors will perform up to 300 sight restoring surgeries, as well as screening thousands of patients for other ophthalmic conditions. The total cost of the camp is approximately CA$15,000.
Tibet has one of the highest incidences of blindness in the world. The majority of those affected live in remote areas, unaware of available treatments, or are simply unable to reach a hospital because of poverty and lack of transportation.
“Tibet is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places in the world, yet sadly many of its own people cannot appreciate that beauty,” stated Bruce Poon Tip, CEO of G.A.P Adventures. “Through this eye camp we will help some of those people to once again see the splendour of their country, as well as the faces of their family and friends.”
Known by the locals as ‘eye openers’, Seva’s 25 microsurgical eye camps conduct 2,500 sight restoring surgeries annually. Beneficiaries of the sight restoring surgery may range from young children with congenital cataracts to the elderly with age-related cataracts. Planeterra’s involvement is a bid to help Seva eliminate preventable blindness within the region.
