Nail-Aid Promotes Women’s Health as Signatory to Compact for Safe Cosmetics

Nail-Aid, a division of Anise Cosmetics, was the first nail care products company to sign the European Union’s Compact for Safe Cosmetics and has partnered with the Breast Cancer Fund, an organization that advocates increased testing of cosmetic ingredients and banning of chemicals known to be toxic and carcinogenic. Nail-Aid has never used suspect chemicals and never will.

North Miami Beach, FL, October 24, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Nail treatment product manufacturer Nail-Aid believes that a woman’s beauty shouldn’t come at the cost of her health. Committed to the use of safe, cruelty-free ingredients in all its products, Nail-Aid, a division of Anise Cosmetics, was the first nail care products company to sign the European Union’s Compact for Safe Cosmetics and has partnered with the Breast Cancer Fund, an organization that advocates increased testing of cosmetic ingredients and banning of chemicals known to be toxic and carcinogenic. In 2006 the Breast Cancer Fund, supported by activists and activist corporations including Nail-Aid, convinced several major nail polish and nail treatment manufacturers to remove harmful dibutyl phthalate from their products. Dibutyl phthalate has been linked to reproductive system damage and is banned in the EU.

Unfortunately, even with dibutyl phthalate being phased out, many leading cosmetic products still contain chemicals that compromise women’s health. Because only 11% of cosmetics ingredients have been tested for safety in the US, this should come as no surprise. According to a study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, two of the most damaging chemicals in nail products include formaldehyde and toluene.

Researchers have classified formaldehyde, already linked to lung cancer, as an environmental estrogen—it mimics estrogen in the body, and as a result can contribute to breast cancer. Toluene is known to damage the central nervous system, and has also been linked to birth defects and an increased risk of miscarriage following exposure. Nail-Aid has never used these harmful ingredients in any of its products, making its nail treatment safe for women of all ages, as well as pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Nail-Aid believes in corporate responsibility in the areas of health, environmental protection, and women’s and animal rights. A statement on Nail-Aid’s company website, www.NailAidWorks.com, says: “At Nail-Aid, we don’t use legal but questionable ingredients that can put a woman’s health at risk. We strongly believe in being proactive and a leader by applying a precautionary principle to always replace suspect ingredients with safer alternatives. We hope that other nail care brands will begin to follow our approach.”
