DUECO Testifies at U.S. Senate Hearing on Plug-In Hybrid Technology for Commercial Trucks

DUECO, Inc. testifies in regards to Plug-In Hybrid Medium and Heavy-duty trucks to U.S. Senate.

Waukesha, WI, September 21, 2008 --(PR.com)-- DUECO, Inc., a final-stage manufacturer of utility trucks, testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources on September 16th, 2008 in Washington, D.C regarding the benefits of Plug-In Hybrid medium and heavy-duty trucks and the need for government support of research, investment, and consumer incentives to accelerate deployment.

“DUECO encourages the federal government to implement programs to help fund the development of Plug-In Hybrid systems for medium and heavy-duty trucks. Tax incentives for customers, loan guarantee programs, and modification of government purchasing policies to favor Plug-In Hybrid trucks can accelerate deployment,” stated Joe Dalum, Vice President of DUECO. “This is a historic opportunity to develop and deploy the technology needed for the electrification of medium and heavy-duty trucks.”

Compared to passenger vehicles, fuel consumption and emissions are disproportionately large for medium and heavy-duty trucks. Plug-In trucks offer additional advantages to conventional hybrids such as reduced fuel consumption, emissions and maintenance costs, lower noise levels, use of domestically produced energy, and improved vehicle acceleration. In 2007, DUECO, in conjunction with Odyne Corporation, began to deploy 25 Plug-In Hybrid medium duty trucks to a number of investor-owned utilities across the country. DUECO plans to ramp up production significantly in 2009 and expand the use of the technology into other applications.

To enable wide-scale deployment of Plug-In Hybrid trucks, DUECO recommended further development of battery system technology, assessment of Smart Grid technology and advanced metering systems, and accelerated testing programs.

After the hearing, DUECO displayed one of their Plug-In Hybrid aerial lifts for the committee. On Wednesday, the Senate Finance Committee released a revised energy tax package, which includes a more inclusive and higher value plug-in electric drive vehicle credit.
