Community Foundation for Livingston County Awards $10,000 Grant to Livingston County Habitat for Humanity

Endowment to be Used to Help with the expansion of the Home Center (ReStore).

Brighton, MI, October 23, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Community Foundation for Livingston County has awarded a grant of $10,000 to Livingston County Habitat for Humanity to help with the expansion of the Home Center (ReStore) by adding 3,444 square feet to the store.

“We are excited to start the expansion project. Already many volunteers have donated their time in this effort and many more intend to help out,” said Larry Pfeil, executive director of Livingston County Habitat for Humanity. “The Community Foundation has given us tremendous financial assistance with this project and we are very thankful for it.”

The Home Center (ReStore) provides all Livingston County and Southeast Michigan residents with an outlet to purchase building supplies at a lower cost. Building materials, furniture and appliances are donated by the community, including individuals, local contractors and businesses, for resale at significant discount to Home Center (ReStore) customers. This promotes the recycling of useable materials that otherwise might end up in a landfill, as well as generating resources for Livingston County Habitat for Humanity to build homes for people in need of simple, decent, affordable housing.

Every day thousands of people decide to remodel a kitchen, build a house, or start other household construction projects. New materials are being purchased and old materials are being tossed into the garbage. Instead of disposing of these materials, they can be donated to the Home Center (ReStore) to be purchased and used by someone else in their next project. Most materials that go into construction projects can be reused or recycled, which helps reduce the amount of waste added to the environment. From October 2005 through April 2007 the Home Center (ReStore) diverted 670 tons of materials away from landfills and the revenue from the sale of these materials helped build three houses for families in need.

The Livingston County Habitat for Humanity Home Center (ReStore) is located at 7198 Grand River Rd. in Brighton, Mich. For more information about the Home Center (ReStore), please call (810) 220-9986.
