Nurse Next Door Looks to Provide Safer Living for Seniors During National Fall Prevention Week 2008

Offers free home safety assessments to seniors November 24 - 28, 2008.

Vancouver, Canada, November 09, 2008 --(PR.com)-- With the majority of accidental deaths among seniors aged 75 and older the result of falls, fall prevention has become an increasingly important issue in Canada. With this knowledge, Nurse Next Door is giving back to the communities it serves through its annual Fall Prevention Week, offering free home safety inspections to seniors.

Nurse Next Door’s Fall Prevention Program sends staff trained in fall prevention into homes to conduct free home safety assessments for seniors. “We are making the lives of seniors across the country safer by checking their homes for typical fall hazards,” said John DeHart, Nurse Next Door’s Co-founder. “This is our fourth consecutive year running the program and we’ve had enormous success each year. This year we’re really trying to educate families across Canada on how serious the issue is and what can be done to prevent it.”

The statistics regarding senior falls are alarming:
• 33% of older adults living at home fall each year
• 85% of injury-related hospital admissions in seniors are the result of falls
• 90% of hip fractures are the result of falls
• 20% of seniors who suffer a hip fracture from a fall die within one year

The most striking fact is that the majority of senior falls are actually preventable. “Our free home safety assessment allows us to show seniors how to make their homes safer by minimizing the risks,” said DeHart. “We’re urging seniors and their families in all of our locations across Canada to call us early to book their free fall safety assessment.”

Common causes for falls include:
• Area or scatter rugs
• Improper footwear
• Lack of grab bars or hand rails
• Poor lighting
• Pet toys, dishes, and other animal related items
• Lack of rubber mats in bath tubs
