Care House of Oakland County Receives Grant from Verizon Wireless

Funds to implement “Stewards of Children” program.

Detroit, MI, November 23, 2008 --(PR.com)-- CARE House of Oakland County (Michigan) has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Verizon Wireless. The money will be used to implement the “Stewards of Children” program. Stewards of Children was developed by the national Darkness To Light organization to provide education and training about child sexual abuse.

CARE House serves the immediate needs of neglected and abused children in the Oakland County community, while also reaching out with advocacy and prevention programs aimed at breaking the cycles of abuse and neglect.

Stewards of Children applies an innovative approach to address the issue of child sexual abuse.

Explains Miriana Milo, Community Outreach Manager at CARE House, “Stewards of Children is different from other programs. It puts the responsibility for protecting children squarely on the shoulders of adults in the community. This presentation helps adults to recognize and respond appropriately to suspicions of abuse, as well as providing them with steps they can take to prevent children from being abused.”

Added Milo, “Because of civic-minded companies like Verizon Wireless, we are able to help children be safe. We are very grateful to Verizon Wireless for stepping forward and supporting this initiative.”

Stewards of Children is an interactive training program conducted by a trained facilitator using a workbook, a video and discussion as the tools to present the program. It encourages a “call to action” for all participants to become involved and to develop a plan within their respective organizations and communities to address the complex issues related to child sexual abuse. The program provides opportunities for volunteers to become trained facilitators.
