Elk Grove, CA, December 04, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Pleasant Grove High Band Boosters is sponsoring a free Electronic Waste Recycling Day for all area residents and businesses on Saturday, January 17 & Sunday, January 18, 2009 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove.

Band students will be working rain or shine to assist Y-Not Recycle, a certified State of California E-waste collector/recycler, to collect television sets/screens, laptops, computer systems and components, fax machines, copiers, scanners, printers, and toner/ink cartridges, MP3, CD and DVD players and discs, video gaming consoles and games, cell phones and their batteries, stereo components, car and household batteries, and household telephones. Items that cannot be accepted include household appliances, small electrics, electronic or battery-operated tools, and appliances, including microwaves.

Rapid Information Destruction Services (RID) will also be on-site Saturday only, to offer hard drive, ledger, disc, tape and paper shredding, also free of charge. Hard drives must be removed from the computer prior to the event (at your home or business). Staples and paper clips need not be removed; ledgers and binders can be shredded intact. Customers are allowed two grocery bags or two banker’s boxes of material per trip. This free service will be offered on a first come-first served basis from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm or until the truck provided is filled, whichever comes first. Please check out the website at www.ridservices.com for a complete list of items eligible for free shredding.

E-waste is the common name for electronic products that have reached the end of their useful life. Computers, televisions, copiers, mobile phones, and fax machines are common electronic products that make up one of the fastest growing disposal problems in the state of California. Because of heavy metals and other toxic substances contained in these items, the state has prohibited their disposal in public landfills. Many municipalities charge a fee per item to pick up these items from homes and businesses because they have to be disposed of in a special manner.

YNot will make a cash contribution directly to the Band Boosters to help underwrite band events, trips and other expenses, like music and equipment purchases.

On the day of the event, bring electronic equipment and/or material to be shredded to the Pleasant Grove High School parking lot, located at 9531 Bond Road, Elk Grove, 95624, entering the campus from “School Loop Road” off Bond. Signs and volunteers will direct drivers through the parking lot to the collection area, then back out of the campus.
